In the early hours of Wednesday, an armed group forced its way into Hotel Diamante K in Tulum, a property owned by Mexican actor and entrepreneur Roberto Palazuelos, authorities confirmed. The incident took place inside the newly designated Jaguar National Park, a protected area guarded by the Mexican Army and the National Guard.

Officials with the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE) said the event was an attempted robbery that began before dawn, when several individuals entered the coastal hotel and confronted an employee. According to the official statement, the suspects beat the worker after he refused to hand over the keys to the establishment.

Investigators identified and detained four people connected to the incident after reviewing surveillance footage from the hotel’s security cameras, the FGE confirmed later in the afternoon. The suspects initially fled the scene when their attempt to take control of the property failed.

Palazuelos took to his X account to acknowledge the arrests and credited the FGE’s intelligence work for the apprehension of the armed group.

Attempted Robbery at High-Profile Hotel in Protected Area

Hotel Diamante K is located within the Jaguar National Park, an area that has drawn controversy in recent months due to changes in how beach access is managed in the region. Security checkpoints operated by the National Guard and the Army screen visitors entering the hotel zone and surrounding ecological reserves.

According to the FGE, there were no guests present at the site at the time of the incident. No visitors were injured during the attempted robbery. The four suspects were detained and handed over to the public prosecutor’s office, where their legal situation will be determined under Mexican law.

The FGE charged those detained with attempted robbery and aggravated assault, noting that investigations remain ongoing as authorities seek to clarify all aspects of the case.

Local Government Response and Broader Security Context

While local media outlets were reporting on the hotel incident on Wednesday morning, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo, a member of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), was holding a press conference with municipal officials. The mayor did not address the attempted robbery during that briefing.

Tulum, located south of Cancún and Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, has experienced elevated levels of violent crime in recent months, including a notable increase in homicides. Among the high-profile victims was José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, then-Secretary of Security and Civil Protection for the municipality, who was shot and killed in March 2025.

Security forces responded immediately after the hotel alarm was raised and activated investigative protocols, according to the FGE. Video surveillance played a key role in quickly identifying the suspects and leading to their capture, officials said.

National Park Security and Protected Area Operations

Hotel Diamante K sits within a protected ecological zone that also includes the Tulum National Park, part of wider conservation efforts along the Riviera Maya. Personnel from Mexico’s armed forces and the National Guard maintain checkpoints and security operations in the area to enforce both environmental protections and public safety measures.

The separate and intensifying challenges of public safety and environmental protection have shaped local debates in Tulum, including recent disputes over regulatory inspections and compliance by tourism businesses within conservation zones. In late 2025, enforcement actions by Mexico’s federal consumer protection agency, PROFECO, involving hotel rate reviews and compliance checks at Diamante K generated significant public discussion about pricing practices and regulatory communication.

What Comes Next in the Investigation

Authorities have said the detained suspects will remain in custody while prosecutors prepare formal charges and present evidence to a judge. The FGE has not released the names of the suspects, citing privacy laws during the ongoing investigation.

Officials also reiterated that no guests were harmed, and normal operations at the hotel continue as the investigation proceeds. The FGE added that further police work and intelligence gathering will continue in Tulum and surrounding areas as part of efforts to address broader crime trends affecting the region.

Security in Tulum and the broader state of Quintana Roo remains a priority for both federal and local authorities, as the region balances tourism development with public safety imperatives.
