Fewer flights, more charm? Tulum is entering a new phase, and for travelers seeking a quieter, more soulful escape, it might just be the best time to visit.

Less than two years after the inauguration of Tulum International Airport, some major airlines are reducing or adjusting their service. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, combined US seat capacity to Tulum has dropped by 28% compared to December 2024. On paper, it might seem like a setback. But on the ground, something interesting is happening.

Airlines like American, Delta, JetBlue, United, and Air Canada are tweaking their schedules, not necessarily abandoning Tulum, but recalibrating after an initial wave of overestimated demand. Industry analysts like Mike Arnot from Cirium explain this as a natural process: “Airlines test routes, monitor bookings, and adapt based on real-time results.”

And while flights may be fewer, Tulum is still very much open, and thriving in a different way.

A quieter Tulum is a better Tulum

Before the airport, Tulum was famously a two-hour drive from Cancún. That distance helped preserve its off-the-beaten-path identity. When the airport opened, the influx of direct flights brought in a new kind of visitor, and with it, a few growing pains.

But now, with fewer crowds and a return to a gentler rhythm, Tulum is reconnecting with its roots.

“This is the perfect time to come,” says a local yoga retreat host. “The energy is calmer. The beaches are clearer. You get the real Tulum experience, before the masses arrive.”

Indeed, this winter, travelers may find Tulum at its most enchanting: golden sun, cool breezes, and just enough people to keep the vibe alive, without losing the magic.

Natural beauty and wellness at the forefront

Tulum has always offered more than just beautiful beaches. Its cenotes still sparkle with crystalline waters. The Mayan ruins remain perched on the cliffside, timeless and serene. Jungle paths lead to hidden eco-lodges, and boutique hotels now have more room to breathe, and offer better deals to those who arrive.

Travelers looking to escape the northern chill will find a warmer, more welcoming Tulum this season. From wellness retreats and organic restaurants to beach clubs and artisan markets, the town is offering its best side.

“The reduction in flights isn’t a loss, it’s a reset,” one Mexico City-based travel writer told The Tulum Times. “It’s giving Tulum space to breathe, and space for guests to truly enjoy what makes this place unforgettable.”

Easier to enjoy, not harder to reach

While some airlines are focusing on Cancún again, Tulum is still very accessible. Direct flights continue from several US and Canadian cities, and the airport remains fully operational. For those flying into Cancún, the scenic drive south remains an easy, safe route.

Rather than racing to catch up with mega-resorts or massive cruise ports, Tulum is doubling down on quality. And that might be its greatest strength.

Fewer arrivals mean more availability at top-rated hotels. Restaurants are less packed. Sunset beach strolls feel more personal. And travelers can actually find moments of stillness, a rare commodity in today’s tourism hotspots.

Winter in Tulum: the smart traveler’s choice

While some travelers chase crowds, others chase calm. This winter, Tulum offers both, only better balanced.

Popular destinations like Los Cabos or Playa del Carmen may attract more volume, but Tulum gives you something else: intimacy. That sense of connection with the environment, with culture, and with yourself.

Whether you’re drawn by the cenotes, the vegan breakfasts, the morning meditations, or the late-night mezcal bars, there’s something for every kind of traveler. And with fewer crowds, the experience feels more tailored, more authentic, more Tulum.

Tulum isn’t losing ground, it’s finding its rhythm

Some might call it a “correction.” Others see it as evolution. Either way, the essence of Tulum is alive and well.

Even Discover Airlines, Lufthansa’s leisure arm, acknowledged in a recent statement that “Tulum airport has a lot of potential.” They’re simply adjusting their strategy. And that’s what Tulum itself seems to be doing: adjusting, not disappearing.

Like the tide that gently shapes its beaches, Tulum is responding to the moment. Not retreating, refining.
